Acupuncture is an ancient therapy where very fine needles are gently inserted into specific locations on the body to modulate various physiological processes and improve the body’s natural function. The site of needle insertion is based on the individuals presentation and needs.
The body possesses an innate, functional intelligence and a natural drive toward homeostasis. Clinically, we use acupuncture to remove obstructions that prevent the body’s natural regulated state. While acupuncture is an ancient practice, we can view acupuncture through the lens of modern anatomy and bioelectricity - tapping into the body’s own electrical signals to encourage healing.
A small needle can exert a profound effect through the body’s fascia. The majority of acupuncture points are located within or associated with fascial planes and connective tissue. Other common sites include nerve bundles and muscles.
Fascia is a physical network of connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, organ and nerve fibre. It is now appreciated that the fascia acts as a highly sophisticated communication system. The fascial network is the body's original scaffolding. Embryologically, it forms long before our brain or heart, and acts as a conductive grid that facilitates the transmission of signals and electrons throughout the body. When we are healthy, these tissues are hydrated and supple, allowing electrical communication and nutrients to move freely. When we experience injury or chronic tension, this tissue can become bound or dehydrated. This creates physical resistance that prevents energy from reaching the areas that need it most.
Placing needles at specific acupuncture points, typically where the fascia is most responsive, triggers three measurable, physical responses:- Neurological Signalling: The needle stimulates sensory receptors that send a message to the spinal cord and brain. This prompts the nervous system to down regulate and release a cascade of bioactive chemicals including endorphins and anti-inflammatory markers.
- Microcirculation and Blood Flow: Physically, the insertion of a needle causes vasodilation - the opening of local blood vessels. This draws fresh, oxygenated blood into tight tissues, providing the materials necessary for cellular repair.
- Tissue Remodelling: On a microscopic level, acupuncture needles interact with and impact connective tissue. This helps to realign collagen fibres and unstick adhesions that cause restricted movement and chronic pain.
With correct application, acupuncture works by modulating various physiological processes to improve the body’s natural function. By restoring blood flow and clearing the pathways of cellular communication, acupuncture can help your body repair, regenerate and return to its natural state.

Cosmetic acupuncture uses ultra-fine needle insertion and massage to naturally repair and revitalise your skin. Facial acupuncture treatments work to stimulate blood flow, relax the facial muscles, encourage cell regrowth, increase production of collagen and elastin, drain lymphatic fluid, reduce inflammation and fill out fine lines and wrinkles.
By encouraging this, the skin’s appearance and texture can be greatly improved.
Body points are also used, based on the individuals presentation, to restore normal function from within and improve overall results.
At Prahran Acupuncture, we bridge traditional East Asian medicine with modern science to deliver real, lasting results.
We treat the root cause—not just the symptoms—using personalised treatment plans grounded in research, care, and experience.
